Who We Are
The Newark Workforce Development Board (NWDB), under the direction of Mayor Ras J. Baraka’s Office of Workforce Development, is both a government agency and a 501 c-3 non-profit organization. The mission of the NWDB is to lead and empower the City of Newark’s workforce system by leveraging assets and resources to ensure the educational, professional and economic success of Newark residents, and the prosperity of businesses in our community.
The Newark Workforce Development Board is a business-led Board of Directors that engages businesses to link the services of the local workforce system with the needs of the private sector. The NWDB also works in conjunction with the City of Newark’s Department of Economic Development, and related organizations, to promote economic growth and to fully utilize the workforce system. The NWDB is charged with integrating publicly funded workforce services and job training programs into a system that is flexible, seamless, accountable, and responsive to the needs of both workers and businesses.
Created pursuant to the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998, which was later reauthorized as the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) of 2014, the Newark Workforce Investment Board was incorporated in 2001 and is now renamed the Newark Workforce Development Board. The NWDB’s chief role is to ensure that optimal investments are made in the City of Newark to support workforce development, training, and job preparation for residents.
In collaboration with our State and Local partners, the Newark Workforce Development Board has several Joint Sub-Committees with the Essex County Workforce Development Board:
- Business & Economic Development
- Youth Investment Council
- Education and Literacy
- Disability Issues
The Newark Workforce Development Board also facilitates the Newark One-Stop Partners Committee.
How We Partner
We are doing great things at the Newark Workforce Development Board (NWDB) and we want the world to know!
The NWDB, through WIOA and the New Jersey Unified Plan, is responsible for providing strategic direction and operational oversight for the Newark One-Stop Career Center, which includes Newark Works, Newark Youth One-Stop, Newark Career Training Center and the Office of Re-Entry, through a system-wide operational planning, policy development and strategic analysis in the local Newark workforce investment area.
To successfully accomplish this, the NWDB:
• Oversees WIOA funds by driving investments based on industry needs
• Sets the strategic direction of Newark’s Workforce and One-Stop System
• Creates forums for analyzing and discussing critical workforce issues to determine the best implementation strategies
• Partners with State and Local elected officials to ensure NWDB efforts are aligned with the goals of the City of Newark
• Conducts labor market analysis to better assess labor demand and to advocate for employer and job-seeker needs
• Increases system accountability by developing policy and providing oversight over the programs and services facilitated by Newark Works
The NWDB is not only a government agency; we are a non-profit 501c3 organization. We support the operation of many programs, in partnership with Newark Works, which require staff support and funding. Our federal and state workforce funding is limited in amount, and very restricted in its use. Many of the special initiatives and creative programming that we need to implement require an alternative funding source. As a non-profit, we have a special opportunity provided to us to solicit outside funding in various ways – Supplemental Government Grants, Corporate Foundations, Planned Giving and Individual Tax-Deductible Donations.
We invite our Corporate and Community partners to invest in the extraordinary impact of our organization by supporting our fundraising efforts . We need access to unrestricted funding that will allow us to continue to provide the innovative specialized training, programs and support services that empower Newark Residents and lead them on the path to self-sufficiency. Together we all win!
What is the NWDB?
The Newark Workforce Development Board (NWDB) is a business-led board that acts like a Board of Directors to identify the needs of the local job market and to link resources. The NWDB also works in conjunction with economic development and related organizations to promote economic growth and to fully utilize the workforce system. The NWDB is charged with integrating publicly funded workforce services and job training programs into a system that is flexible, seamless, accountable, and responsive to the needs of both workers and businesses.
The NWDB is based at the Newark One-Stop Career Center. One-Stop Career Centers are designed to provide a full range of assistance to job seekers under one roof. Established under the Workforce Investment Act and more recently the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, the centers offer training referrals, career counseling, job listings, and similar employment-related services, including positive recruitment events for employers. Customers can visit a center in person, call, or visit the center's information through the internet. The Newark One-Stop should be your first stop for jobs, training, and financial help.
We are responsible for providing strategic direction and operational oversight for the Newark One-Stop Career Center, which includes Newark Works, Newark Youth One-Stop, Newark Career Training Center and the Office of Re-Entry.
